Currency

The currency of the Republic of China is the New Taiwan Dollar, also called yuan or NT. Denominations of bills are 100 yuan, 200 yuan, 500 yuan, 1000 yuan and 2000 yuan; denominations of coins are 1 yuan, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 20 yuan, and 50 yuan.

Government Offices are open 08:30~12:30 & 13:30~17:30
Shops are generally open from 10:00~22:00 with the exception of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Department store are closed on Lunar New Year´s Day and the day after and business hours are 11:00~21:30.
Most restaurants remain open year round. Lunch hours are 12:00-14:00; Supper hours are 18:00~21:00 Convenience stores are open 24 hours a day.

 
Transportation

Taxis charge NT$80 for the first 1.5 kilometers and an additional NT$5 every 300 meters thereafter. When traffic is too heavy for the taxi to move, the meter will add NT$5 per 2 minute. Night hours are 23:00-06:00 and the night surcharge is 20%. The surcharges for calling a taxi or use of the trunk is NT$10. If you are going to a suburban area or a relatively distant location, the taxi driver may chose not to use the meter and may wish to negotiate a price, so it is advised the matter be discussed with the taxi driver. A majority of taxi drivers do not speak English, so it is advised that visitor seek the help of hotel staff to tell the taxi driver where you are going when heading out and that they write down the hotel address as a reference for you return journey.

 
MRT public transportation

There are 5 lines in the Taipei MRT transportation system, that run from 06:00~24:00. One-way tickets are NT$20~65. You may also purchase a One-day Pass for NT$150, allowing unlimited rides in a single day and may be purchased at MRT customer service counters. There are many sites to see along the MRT lines. Tourists are encouraged to make use of the system.
